Taille D’épargne, or black enamel tracery, is one of the most stunning aesthetic trends of the 19th century. This technique, translated from French as “saving cut”, is a type of champlevé (enamel work) in which fine lines are engraved into metal and filled with opaque enamel – often a stunning, vibrant black enamel.
This gorgeous pair of Taille D’épargne bangles are a pinnacle example of this gorgeous aesthetic. Taille D’épargne was an important part of the mid-late 19th century aesthetic, with its close relationship to Victorian aestheticism and the East Lake Visual movement. And indeed, all the elements of these different decorative trends are visible in these bangles. Even as scrap, these bangles would be worth $2000 at minimum!
Crafted circa 1880 in 14 carat gold, these bangles are American in origin and feature a gorgeous scrolling foliate design. There is a lovely mix of botanical motifs, as well as geometric shapes that hint at the future Art Deco design sensibilities of the early 20th century. Together, they make for truly opulent statement pieces with the most memorable silhouette!
Also notable is that these are near mint condition examples, being sold in their original Black Starr & Frost box. This is interesting, as Black Starr & Frost has a storied history in the world of decorative arts. Touting themselves as “America’s First Jewelry Brand”, Black Starr & Frost wasn’t in fact the first – but they did remain one of the oldest and most well-known jewelry retailers of early America.
Between the rich, stunning craftwork and incredible mint condition, these bangles are a rare and wonderful addition to any antique jewelry collection!
